Legal Question in Business Law in California

Can I run a web site by using other web sits' data?

Hi LawGuru,

I would like to know if it's legal to run a web site, which will use the data from other commercial web sites. For example, I want to run a web site that compares the price of the same product gotten from Safeway.com and Albertsons.com. The purpose is to provide a free service and convenience for the shoppers to save more money.

Thanks very much in advance!

Tony

I don't see anything wrong with this. The price information is not copyrighted, nor is there any copyright to mere facts. Further, the prices are not entitled to protection as trade secrets. I cannot say for 100% sure that your site won't violate any law, ever, but the basic concept is not contrary to any law or policy I'm familiar with.
