Legal Question in Business Law in California
Selling Art
I am an artist and I paint portraits of
different celebrities from photos I
find. I would like to start selling my
art of these celebs. I was wondering
if the is any legal problems i could
run into from selling these paintings
if they are paintings of celebrities?

Re: Selling Art
Celebrities have the right to control the use of their likenesses. There are limits to this right, but those limits would not be an issue here. Selling paintings of them for a profit without their permission would violate those rights. You would be civilly liable to each celebrity whose portrait you sold, and your liability would exceed the purchase price of the paintings.
