Legal Question in Business Law in California

Stolen Laptop

We held a small business conference at a well-known hotel in California. During the conference there was a 2 hour break. Before we left the conference room, we ask the hotel's receiptionist to close and lock the coference door because we have important equipment/document inside. I asked her twice to lock the door before I left. However, she didn't. And our laptop was stolen.

The hotel didn't want to replace/compensate our loss, can I sue them? Do I have any grounds to sue them? I told the hotel personnel to lock to door. But she didn't, so is it their responsiblity? Thanks!

Re: Stolen Laptop

If the hotel receptionist assured you that she would lock the door, you had reason to rely on the assurances. A small claims suit would be appropriate. Get your receipt for the computer together, along with an estimate of its present worth -- including software and other info on it -- to present to the court.

Re: Stolen Laptop

There may be something about this issue in the contract(s) that you signed when you agreed to pay for the conference room in exchange for being able to utilize the room.
