Legal Question in Business Law in California

I am treasurer of a local middle school band booster organization. I'm wondering if we need to file taxes each year, or if there is an exemption form we need to complete each year---or one time only?? I'm new at this, and don't have a bunch of experience with this. We are non-profit, and we can barely cover our parades, and instrument repairs. Should we be concerned that we've never filed anything with the IRS? We do have a tax I.D. number.

If you go to the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov and search appropriately, you'll find a group of forms with "990" series numbers, including a 990, 990-EZ, and a 990-N. You'll also find instructions for which to use and how to fill them out. It might also be useful to ask the other parents if any of them is (or knows) a CPA or tax expert who could assist you for free. However, I think you'll find the forms pretty simple to select from and use.
