Legal Question in Business Law in California
I currently own an upholstery shop and I want to go into home flooring also, what I need to know is can I add flooring to my existing business license to expand or will I need to get a new license for flooring. I want to keep both business's under the same name mostly because I have been in business in my area for the past twenty years and my company name is well known.

You would not need a new business license, and if you only sell but do not offer installation of the flooring, you probably don't need a contractor's license. If you want to offer installation too, and I assume you do to be competitive, you will need a license from the Contractors State License Board.
Business licenses of the kind you mean are administered locally under city (or county) ordinances. You can just call or visit City Hall and talk to the business license office. My guess is that your current license is all you need. License fees are often based upon the gross revenues of the business, and when you expand you may end up paying more. Keep in mind that installation is probably going to require a contractor's license issued by the Contractors' State License Board after application and an examination.
As a Franchise Attorney I only add the following to the other attorney answers. If you want to install the flooring, and you don't have the applicable Contractor's License for the classification that covers flooring installation, you can always hire someone who does and operate under their license. I believe you have to file the appropriate paperwork with the CSLB (Contractors State Licensing Board). Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
