Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California
My friend lent us his DVD collection we never even wanted, for 6 to 8 months we tried to cooperate and return it then he goes out of state for over a year. Five months ago he's demanding to get the item back. He left in summer of 2014. Is the collection now mine because the item lent to me was 3 years ago and he never bothered to get it back on agreed terms, dates and places? He is still in possession of purchase receipts.

If he "lent" them to you, then you and he agreed that they will be returned at some point. He should pay for the return shipping costs, though.
Your logic makes no sense. You borrowed his collection and had the benefit of using it for the past three years. Aside from the fact that you are legally obligated to return, you should have the decency to return it back to the rightful owner.
