Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

If my girlfriends ex-boyfriend continues to harass us and threaten with acts of violence, can we do anything about it? Also I have gotten close to him laying a hand on me, if he so happens to hit me, is there anything I can do in that situation? They have a child involved as well. I have seen this man push his ex and prevent her from calling the police. She has also informed me of acts of violence towards her. What can I do to prevent this. I work for the United States Army and cannot risk losing my career over this man.

You can file for a restraining order against him to stop the harassment and coming within a certain distance of you, prevent his having visitation rights as to the child, report him to the police for assault, sue him in civil court for damages for his acts. Talk to the local army legal officer to see if they can help.

If you fear for your and your girlfriend's safety, you both may obtain a civil harassment restraining order from the court in the county in which you reside, which includes a stay-away order. If you have witnessed violence or threats of violence toward the child, you might call Child Protective Services and let them investigate.
