What is the legal basis for most of the current lawsuits? Negligence? Product Liability? Breach of Contract?

My guess would be that most lawsuits filed in California are for eviction (Unlawful Detainer).
You could contact the Judicial Council of California (www.courtinfo.ca.gov) to see if they keep statistics on such things. Probably they do.
