Is it legal to ask what their disability is, when social security disability is their only income?

If someone is receiving social security disability payments, it is presumed that the social security administration already determined that there is a disability. Your question is vague as to who is asking about the disability. If there's a need to know to provide an employee with a workplace accommodation, then it might be appropriate.
