Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California
Legality of search of my person and personal effects
I work in an office building which is rented on a monthly basis from the property lanlord by my employer (a parcel carrier service). After Sept.11, 2001, a security checkpoint was implemented at all entrances & exits. At these, all persons entering the building are asked for I.D.as well as bags and personal handheld effects being physically searched by security officers.Do I have a legal right NOT to give my consent to such a search of my personal effects on the basis of my Fourth Amendment rights?

Re: Legality of search of my person and personal effects
The 4th Amendment right against search and siezure applies only to government actions, and anyone acting on their behalf. Even if this is a government building, you have a problem: You can refuse to allow them to check your personal belongings, but they have a right to exclude you from the building. That might make working a little difficult!
