Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

Limited Civil Case, what next?

I have filed a limited civil case and have had the defendant served. He has answered me. When I went to the court to find out what to do next, the clerk told me that I needed to ''read things'' about the case I am pursuing or ''get a lawyer.'' I am not sure what to read exactly and can't afford a lawyer, unfortunately. What do I file next? A case management form? The case was filed in Los Angeles.

Re: Limited Civil Case, what next?

You have taken on what may or may not be a substantial task depending upon the complexity of your case. Sometimes your local law library is a good source of information, however it would be advisable to at least speak with an attorney concerning your case to understand what you may be involved moving forward. Many attorneys will provide you with a free, confidential consultation.

I would be happy to discuss some of the issues concerning your case to see how I may be of assistance.

I offer prospective clients an initial consultation of 30 minutes for free.

I look forward to speaking with you.

Yours truly,

Bryan

You might want to send out form interrogatories to learn more about the defendant and his/her background, send a request for documents, and send a request for admissions. You also might want to set the other party's deposition after you receive its answers to your written discovery.
