Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California
I live in California and work as a firefighter. One of our board members that works for the fire department asked us firefighter how things were going at work. By the look on our face he realized there were issues. We told him we can not discuss things with him because it would break the chain of command. He told us he wants to know everything that is going on with the fire department and that we have his permission to talk to him anythime we want. The Chief caught wind of it and wrote a memo about the chain of command. Our policy states we will follow the chain of command at all times. Can we be fired for not following the chain.The problem we have is with the Chief and feel the board needs to be aware of it and how it is affecting the moral there. Does California have some law that supercedes our policy. Thanks Matt

I don't know what "board" you are referring to. You would be on safe ground writing to the Governor or a state legislator.
