Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

We lived in Nevada part of the time with the idea of moving there full time. We stored all of our belongings at a storage facility in Nevada, illegally took all of our belongings which was well over $200,000. Because of this we have nothing, and have moved back to California full time. Are we able to sue them in California, although the company and the incident took place in Nevada.

There would be no jurisdiction over the company in a California state court unless they have done business here or have what are called "minimum contacts." You could certainly sue them in a federal court in California because you and the company are in different states and the amount of the lawsuit is over $75,000. Their lawyers would then try to get the case moved to Nevada. There may be reasons to consider a lawsuit in the Nevada state courts instead. Watch out for legal time limits.
