how long can a department store hold a person for accusing them to an accessory of a theft by someone else

As long as necessary for the cops to arrive and take the accused into custody. Were charges filed? If so, was there a conviction? If so, there is no case here. However, if the holding was not based on probable cause and no charges filed or there was no conviction, then there maybe a case here. Need more imfo.
