There are two different ways in CA to change a name: 1) to adopt the new name and use it; 2) to get a court order to change the name. The latter requires publication in a general circulation newspaper a few times, and to appear at a court hearing after paying a filing fee. The former requires perhaps a notarized affidavit of name change. It might also be more of a problem having a birth certificate changed without a court order..
