California doesn't recognize so-called "common law marriage," and most people in your situation are stuck out of luck. Usually when I get asked this question I stop right there. However, the law sometimes recognizes an implied contract between the parties -- look up Marvin v. Marvin -- and the very long relationship that you had could work in your favor. Certainly you have nothing to lose by suing him. Please call a family law attorney in your locality and make an appointment. Do not delay, watch out for legal time limits.
