Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

We married out of country 2 years ago but never got a marriage certificate in California. Can we file the date to the time we got married out of country? California does not go with the common law, could this be an issue to anything in our future and our kids future?

You can always formalize your marriage in California, or Las Vegas, or anywhere in the U.S. The missing fact in your question is why did you get married out of the country? And what country did you get married in? There have been well-publicized instances of people (usually men) getting married outside the country, in some obscure jurisdiction, and then denying the marriage when it later became convenient. I have no idea whether this applies to you, but especially if you are a woman you need to not ever be in a position where there is a question about the fact that you are married. This could affect your right to inherit and your community property rights.
