You probably want to prepare a general power of attorney. California has a statutory power of attorney that can be found at law libraries and stationery stores. It's simple to follow, requires that a few boxes be checked, and that it is notarized. Of course, because of the serious nature of giving another a power of attorney, you might consult with an attorney (or conduct research) to find out some things you should consider but might not have thought about.
