Will my 18 yr old son be drafted ? He is not in school right now but plans to go in the fall 2011. He is my only son, his dad is still alive but we are divorced.

There is no military draft at present. Although the U.S. military is currently involved in at least three wars, 2012 is an election year and I doubt President Obama would risk alienating large numbers of voters by proposing a draft prior to the election. It would also take several months to re-organize the Selective Service System; the first people to be drafted would be 18 and 19 year old men. In the unlikely event of a draft it also would be unlikely that your son would be selected (probably he would be at least 20 by then). If you were to hear of an imminent draft, his options would include pre-emptively enlisting in a branch of service whose members suffer casualties relatively infrequently (for example the Air Force, Navy or Coast Guard as opposed to the Army or Marine Corps).
