Legal Question in Technology Law in California

email break-in

Somebody recently broke into several of my email accounts and deleted them, and all the information in them. I have no way of retrieving this information. Some of the information could have helped me with future employment. Do i have any legal recourse? Does law enforcement take such cases seriously? Does having this person's I.P. address help? And what if they have since changed their I.P. address? Can the old I.P. address be traced back to them?

The police are unlikely to help. If you have the IP address, you could write to the ISP assigned to that network and ask them to retain information about the subscriber using that IP address on the date in question, but do it soon because ISPs keep that information for only a limited time. Ask the ISP to retain the information even if it is unwilling to share it absent a subpoena. That way you can get a subpoena later.

Unfortunately, it is expensive and time-consuming to sue someone whose name you do not know. You may simply be out of luck.
