laptop bought through ebay w/ no serial number
I'll make this short. Police took my laptop because it didn't have a serial number. They told me to show proof of purchase etc. and I would get it back. I did that, provided paypal receipt and the co. whom I bought it from faxed me any other paperwork involved in the transaction, even the box it came in.(I had to buy windows xp to get it running.)The police said they needed my password to check for the internal s/n - I provided it. They never called. I left numerous messages then finally today got ahold of them. They said there wasn't an internal serial number and so I couldn't get it back.I asked if I could get my windows xp out of it since it's registered in that computer. They said I should have the disk, I said I do but it's still registered to that computer and if I try to put it in another computer it will say it's already registered to another computer. He told me to call microsoft. What do I do now? Please help! thank you in advance.

Re: laptop bought through ebay w/ no serial number
You've left out a big part of the story. How did the police notice that the laptop has no serial number? They must have been examining it for a reason. Without knowing that reason there is no way to say how likely they are to release it to you or how you can go about getting it back.
