police won't release my computer

Cops confiscated my laptop because it didn't have a s/n.I told them it was a refurbished computer.They told me to show proof of purchase and I could get it back. I showed them the receipt (paid through paypal)the UPS tracking of the package after purchase, the box it came in. Also had the company I bought it from ($199 computer store in Arizona) call the detective, telling them that it is required for them to remove the s/n and a regular practice in their business for privacy and security reasons. They gave the phone number and any other info. they might need to get in contact with them if they had any other questions. The police still won't release it to me. I've already been to court, so it has nothing to do with my case. There is nothing incriminating on the computer whatsoever. Also have a signed letter from the company saying that it was bought legally (which I have yet to be able to show them). The penal code 537e.(c) should apply. I've been ripped off by the cops and they are ignoring the very thing that they enforce every day. What next?
