Legal Question in Technology Law in California

Sale of a web site domain name

Hi,

I own a domain name. I actually used to run a classified ad web site but decided to shut it down since I found teaching to be a better career. The domain name includes name of a town I live in and then word ''classifed dot com''. For example ''splitswilleclassified dot com'' The local newspaper I would try to sell this domain name to (which has a readership of about 100,000 to 150,000. ) does not have too good of a name. You have to go to their online web site and then enter ''/classified dot com'' For example www dot splitswillebee dot com/classified. I am thinking about writing a letter of offer to sell a web site domain name to their head marketing person but I don't know what to price the name and not sure what exactly steps to take. By the way when I ran the site they would check me out every once in a while since I was able to trace their IP address. Thanks for taking time to answer my question.

Re: Sale of a web site domain name

Your asking price is a matter of business savvy, not legal expertise. We can't really help you with that. Don't expect to hit the jackpot, though. If the newspaper wanted the name badly enough to pay a fortune for it chances are it would have contacted you already.

By the way, the hits from the newspaper's computers don't necessarily mean management is checking you out. Perhaps employees of the paper are simply using your site for their own reasons.
