Legal Question in Technology Law in California

The website, familysearch.org, publishes Social Security numbers on their free search site. Both of my parents' full SSN numbers are accessible via this site. It is the perfect place for people to obtain personal information and steal identities. They also list where they were born. Is there any way to make them stop this practice?

Your starting point would be to review California Civil Code section 1798.85, available on line, which seems to outlaw the practice. I did not see any reference to a fine or other penalty, however, so I suppose someone adversely affected by a violation of this law would have to file a civil action and plead and prove damages, or at least ask for an injunction. Also, I don't know where the Web site you mention operates from or whether it would be subject to California law.
