Client holding hostage contractors' tools

Black client was charged for grand theft, but the 2 white police officers left my tools at client's home and no arrest made. I am waiting two weeks for D.A. response. Black police supervisor believes this is business dispute. I need my tools worth $8000-10,000 to continue working. What are my rights in this case? Thank you!

Politely explain to the police (to a sergeant or higher, if possible) that there is no business dispute as to who owns the tools. The tools are YOURS and the homeowner has no claim to ownership of the tools.

This is a case of theft. Explain that the law entitles you to undertake reasonable means to recover your property. Rather than break in and risk resulting violence, you'd prefer that the police provide assistence in helping you recover your tools.

Remind them that, if the homeowner believes there is a dispute, the homeowner can file a lawsuit - he CANNOT just take possession of your personal property!!!!
