Legal Question in Construction Law in California

Contractor

This questions is when you hired a contractor and found out that he is an unlicense contractor. I ahve piad him quite a bit of money already, but still has not completed the job. Today i found out that they did not go to the house today. If he has just left and not want to finish the job can i do anything about this matter we have a written agreement of what need to be done ?

The law says that you don't have to pay an unlicensed contractor anything, plus, you can recover back from the contractor anything you have paid him. The reality, though, is that it may be quite difficult to get anything back from an unlicensed contractor because they generally have nothing.
