Legal Question in Construction Law in California

I had two contracts with a contractor. I cancelled the larger of the two. We could not come to an agreement on the contract I cancelled. He started both jobs at the same time. I stopped both because of sub standard and unsafe work like not connecting ground wires. Now the contractor filed a 20 day notice. What steps do I need to take on the 20 day notice on a contract I cancelled? Any lawyers in the Ventura CA area?

There is nothing to be done on the 20-day notice. A party with a direct contract with the owner doesn't even need to give a 20-day notice. So I'm not sure why they bothered.
