Is it detrimental to the successful claimant in a civil lawsuit to seek a Deed of Trust (or take any position) on real estate to secure the award/judgement?

No and it can increase the chances of payment later on. Your first step should be to record an Asbtract of Judgment and that will put a lien on any real property belonging to the judgment debtor.
