Legal Question in Construction Law in California
I live in the San Joaquin County and I am interested in converting my living room into a bedroom. All that is needed is a wall and a door installed. Electrical work is not needed. I know that it is recommended that I get a permit, but I would like to know how it will affect me if I do it without a permit. Will building the wall cancel my home insurance? Can I legalize the room down the road?

A "legal" bedroom would also require a closet and a certain window area. What about heating and cooling? I would advise getting the permit up-front. Legalizing down the road might be possible, but don't count on it; you quite likely would be limited to removing the alterations in order to get back to legal status. As to insurance, read your policy and/or ask your agent.
