what is the maximum a contractor can ask for in advance of work being done

For home improvement contracts, 10% or $1,000, whichever is LESS. It is illegal and a license violation to collect any other amounts before the work is complete, unless it is for work actually done and/or materials actually delivered to the jobsite.
