Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
broken vase at country club
I accidentally knocked over a large vase on the outdoor patio restaurant of my country club. They are making me pay for it and it is very expensive. Are they within their rights to make me pay? (no alcohol involved - just knocked it over when backing up my chair to get up from my seat.

If you were negligent, you are liable for the value of the vase. Whether you were neglient depends on whether you acted according to an objectively reasonable standard of care. That is a question of fact. if the vase was located in a dangerous or awkward location, the restaurant may be at least partly at fault. But you have an uphill battle on this issue. If you are a good longstanding and future member, and they wanted to maintain and build goodwill, they might be inclined to pay all or part of it. Good luck.

Call your homeowners' or renters' insurance carrier and they will deal with it, that's what they're there for.
