Buying alcohol with a passport?

When asked for ID, I present my passport. Several stores in my area (San Luis Obispo) won't accept them. Is this legal? I thought California State Law said that any federal/state issued id was valid...

Let's face it, some store clerks are dummies. And they are scared of sting operations. Maybe you could complain to the state Alcoholic Beverage Control board.

I assume you're showing the ID to buy cigarettes or alcohol. They can refuse to sell you that stuff if they don't like your shirt. So, if they don't like your ID, they can also refuse to sell you that stuff. You should politely try to educate the manager. If you can't, you should find a store with less stupid employees.
