Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
I cancelled my health club membership before the end of the contract due to poor customer service. The health club wants me to pay off the contract (which I can understand) but they are also demanding a $150 cancellation fee on top of it. Is this additional fee legal?

Fees arising from contract breach is very common, whether it is legal or not will depend on your contract with them. Review your membership agreement.
