Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
car rental contract/billing issue
I recently had to rent car, and was lied to by the salesperson about the additional insurance.
She said that it was against their company policy for me use my own liability insurance to rent the car, and due to circumstances I was in no position to argue. Previously when I had rented a car from the same place, I did not take the additional insurance. I told her this she said company policy had changed. I asked her three times to confirm that it was required in order to rent the car that I have to have the optional insurance. She said yes and there was no manager available to answer the question, so I signed the contract. When I later had a question with about the bill I was informed by the corporate office that the rental insurance was indeed optional and that my own insurance was adequate.
I was lied to by the salesperson who sold me something I didn't need. I am refusing to pay the insurance billed to me and disputing the bill, they are saying that I owe them the money.
Please advise me what are my rights..and my recourse, they're threatening legal action and my credit because of this dispute.

Re: car rental contract/billing issue
Pay them. Next time, use a more reputable rental agency (I know, without your having to tell me, that this was Thrifty or another 3rd tier car rental co.). Never take extra insurance, fuel options, or anything they try to sell you at the counter except maybe for upgraded cars. Read travel sites like flyertalk.com or (especially) biddingfortravel.com.
