Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Changing personal hand-written signatures

How can I change my personal signature? I have been using one signature for sometime and would like to change it for my security. Is there any formal method of changing it?

Yes. You can use your other hand.

Re: Changing personal hand-written signatures

You can sign your name any way you like. You can sign by making an "X" if you like. If your name is Bob, you can sign your name "MARY" if you like. Your signature is what you say it is. You can sign it differently every single time, if you like.

The only significance is whether, when it matters, it can be determined whether or not a purported signature is actually YOUR signature. So, for that reason, it's not a good idea to change it frequently or to adopt a signature that is easy to copy. Typically, a person's standard writing has so many unique characteristics that one doesn't have to make an effort to be distinct.

So, that's a generalized lecture on signatures. The answer to your question is probably . . . go ahead and adopt a new signature. Stop by the bank and let them know as they'll probably have you sign another signature card to ensure there is no delay in processing your checks.

You can, but why would you? You would then need to update your signature card with your bank, and maybe even on your credit cards. Just keep signing your name the way you have been.
