Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Civil Law Case involving Shoplifting

I was arrested for shoplifting at Walmart. I went to court and received my sentence. Now the Walmart lawyers want me to pay $300. They recovered all of their merchandise - why must I pay this and what will happen if I don't? Keep in mind that I am on SSI and am living well below poverty. A friend tells me to ignore them but I don't want a record nor do I want anything bad on my credit. I'm willing to pay it I just don't know why I should. Thanks for your help.

Re: Civil Law Case involving Shoplifting

Wal Mart may be trying to get you to cover their costs involved in investigating this matter. If you are on SSI, they should relent, but they are known for taking a strong position. You might be able to negotiate with them.

If you would like to talk about this more, please feel free to contact my office for a free consultation.
