Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Is a consumer who while trimming trees droped a branch on an electric line liabl

We were trimming trees and dead bruish that posed both a fire hazard and were marring the beauty of our grounds. Indadvertantly a branch fell on a power line causing an outage. The electric company came and repaired the line. We were told at that time that the power company would in the future maintain this brush. However, that was four months ago and they have not made any effort to do so. Now, they are billing us over $22,000 for the accident. Granted they have access to the area around the lines. Still, they are not maintaining the vegetation and so we felt compelled to accomplish this task.

Are we liable for this sum they have asked for?

Close question. Since they did not clear the brush before, you had a right to do so. You might wish to check to see if they had a right or duty to clear before the accident.
