Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

damages to consumer by manufacturers product

I had a machine shop build a performance motor for my car. We wanted a cam based on the configuration of the engine. The manufacturer from Tennessee stated in there parts book that ther cam was made of cast steel. After I got the new engine running the cam chewed off the teeth from the distributor This left metal pieces throughtout the entire motor which would require removal and total dissasembly. the cam manufacturer stated from the research they did from our serial and part numbers they did in fact manufacture this cam from billet steel but were only willing to replace the cam if necessary and would give a discount on a new distributor gear. Is the manufacturer of the cam responsible for removal, cleaning, and repair of my engine at current Califorina costs even if they are in Tennessee and thought I purchased there product from a Nevada wholesaler?
