Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Dry Cleaner Loses Suit

Suit gets dropped off at out-of-town dry cleaners in the AM & ordered SAME DAY service for friend's wedding the next day. Return to dry cleaners in the PM to pick up suit, but it's not there. They say it's lost. Have a couple of hours to buy a replacement suit and get it altered before wedding. Dry cleaners employee assures me that I can purchase a replacement suit & that I will be reimbursed for the new suit. Go to department store, and purchase a new comparable suit. Next day, I return to the dry cleaners, and they give me an apology letter, $5.00 coupon, and a check for what the owner of the shop believes is how much a rental suit would cost (plus $2.00 for parking at the Mall). Then later, original suit was found and returned to me. So, now I have two suits (one of which would never have bought if it hadn't been for their negligence), and a check in the amount of a suit rental fee. I have not deposited the check, and I want to know what my options are?
