i financed a used car put liability insurance on it and one day while driving it caught fire. a total loss. do i still owe the used car lot?

Yes, if you did not buy comprehensive coverage, you owe the car seller.

Mr. Marman is dead wrong. You owe whomever financed the car whether you have comprehensive or not. Whether you are insured or not has nothing to do with what you owe. The only way you might not owe the balance due is if the seller is the lender, and there was an undisclosed defect or a defect under some warranty from the seller, that caused the fire.
