Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

general release of liability

I am hiring a carpenter to do cabinet refacing of cabinets in my kitchen. I do not believe he has workman's compensation. He is willing to sign a release of liability. Will this signed document be sufficient to protect me from any injury he might sustain on the job?

Thank you for your advise.

Re: general release of liability

Do not hire anybody to do work on your home -- do not allow them onto your property --- unless they have a current and valid contractors license that you have verified with the State Contractors License Board, and proof of workers' compensation that you have verified with the insurer. Verify you must, as I have seen cases of forged "proof"! Otherwise you could be liable for tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars if there were a serious injury. A signed piece of paper won't save you in such a circumstance.
