Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
Hello,
I'm having a really difficult time with a roofing contractor that the insurance company provided. Long story short, I authorized a payment of $2,000 to the company, but I didn't want them to record my card number so I told them to call me when they were back in their office to manually punch my card numbers into their machine.
About 4 days later I see another charge for $900 from this company, a charge that I'm disputing. Regardless of the amount, I never authorized them to charge that card. Furthermore, the fact that they charged the card 4 days later tells me that they illegally stored the name on my card, the card number, the expiration date, and the CV number. It seems like a huge privacy violation, but I'm not really sure.
Do I have any grounds for legal action here?

You don't have any grounds for civil legal action because you caught the charge and challenged it. So you have no damages. I would recommend, however, that you report this to the police.
I would also report it to the Contractors State License Board.
