Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Lease Transfer

I just leased a car through a dealership about 8 months ago. I want to get out of the lease because it's not affordable for me at this time. I have a person who is interested in taking over the lease. She will fill in the paperwork, and the lease will be transferred to her. However, according to the dealer, I am still ultimately liable. Is there any way around this, such as getting a letter typed up stating that the new person who is leasing will be fully responsible, and have us both sign it and get it notarized? I don't want to get stuck in a bad situation.

Re: Lease Transfer

More than likely, the lease is held by a bank or finance company. If the company who you make your payments to will agree to this new person, no problem. However, they are not required to approve this new person. Then, you are liable on the lease for any default caused by non payment. Your friend may pay as scheduled, but if not, then you are liable and no document between you and her will change that.
