At 17 a car can be registered in your name.

You don't, but the seller would be a fool to sell to a 17 year old without the signature of an adult who buys on his behalf. The vehicle may be registered in the name of the 17 year old alone.

You may register the car under 17 year old name, however, contractual relationship with 17 year old may be considered unenforceable.
