Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Legal Question About Car Purchase

I bought a car from a private party for $1,400 and within one week it completely broke down. In addition to the $1,400 I paid over $200 to have the title transferred and to have it towed after it stopped running. Now the seller says he will fix it for another $300 but can not gaurantee it will run and that he might ''need'' more money for repairs. I have a bill of sale and want a refund of some if not all the money plus the extra $200 I've spent. I just want to know if I have any legal rights if he refuses to refund. He has admitted the problem with the car was present before he sold it to me. Thank you for your time.

Re: Legal Question About Car Purchase

Did you buy it as-is? Did you inspect it or have it inspected? Generally, you buy a used car as is. He cannot intentionally hide something from you, but he does not have to disclose it.

Did you at least make sure he had it smogged before you bought it?
