Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Lemon Law or Cooling Off Period...? or ?

A friend of mine recently purchased a brand new Mazda automobile. He has owned the car for less then 30 days and now the transmission has gone out. Is there any lemon laws that apply to this? or I thought I heard there was a cooling off period law that went into effect this year to protect buyers in cases such has this? I think he should get a new car, but I don't know the law. A brand new car needing a new transmission has to be rare, but what protects the consumer and does the consumer have the right to demand another new vehicle?
