Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
I used to live in illinois and some retailers didn't take out of state checks. Now I live in california and I recently made purchases with my checks that have an illinois address and the cashiers did not give me any trouble about it. Did the laws change? Also, the retailers used to keep the checks, why do some retailers return my checks to me?Why don't they keep them?

Although there are always changes in the law, what mainly has changed is technology. When retailers run your checks through the cash register systems they have, it reads the magnetic routing and account numbers on the bottom of your check, and the same connection that tells if your credit or ATM card is good and has enough money available connects to your checking account runs the same process as if you had used a card. As for whether they keep your check or not I think that is a matter of what their merchant services bank requires as far as verifying transactions, keeping an audit trail, etc.
