Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Motorhome got towed from repair shop

About 7 momths after my husband died, I had to have his motorhome towed from his brothers house to a repair station. The repair shop had the motorhome for about 3 weeks when I noticed (by driving by) that it was no longer at the shop. When I called to find out what was going on, I got the response, ''What do you mean? We have been busy, sorry it is taking so long''. I asked them where the motorhome was because it was no longer at the shop they said, ''of course it is!'' Upon realizing that it wasn't there they told me to file a police report...that it must have been stolen. Upon calling the police department, I was informed that it had been towed, due to expired tags. It is true the tags had expired, but the registration had been paid, all that was needed was smog, which was in the motorhome. The shop said it was parked on their private property. After spending almost $2000 I had it towed to a differnt shop. I soon found out that it was towed from the first shop at approx. 4:30PM and one of the guys who worked there witness it being towed, but didn't question it. I guess my question is...Can I be compensated for the money I had to spend? Afterall they didn't even fix the motorhome.

Thanks in advance!
