Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

moving company

I hired a moving company to move my dinette set to my daughter's house. During the move, the movers broke the glass of my china cabinet. I got an estimate for $1,000 from a glass company, and the moving company paid me $1,000. Is it legal to just keep the $1,000 and not fix the broken glass or do I have to fix the broken glass and show proof to the moving company that I had replaced the glass with the money they sent me? If it's okay, I want to just be stuck with the glassless china cabinet and keep the $1,000. Thx!

Re: moving company

You do not have to make the repairs. You can keep the money.

Re: moving company

Unless you signed an agreement obligating you to make the repairs, which is doubtful, you can simply keep the money. You used a good moving company; that was smart.
