does an 'as is' purchase from a private party have any recourse if the sellor knowingly hides faults and defects in the merchandise from the purchaser?

No, provided that you can prove a) that the seller knew of the problem; b) that it was not disclosed; and c) that it was not apparent to you from a visual inspection

I agree with Herb, if you can prove those three things its basically called fraud.
